These pictures are part of a ritual we call “Gaye Holud” (turmeric on the body). It is a very colourful, vibrant pre-wedding celebration. For now we kept this and the wedding ceremony very small and private among our very few close family members due to pandemic.

“Gaye Holud” somewhat equivalents to a western bridal shower. For the holud ceremony, fresh tumeric is made into a paste and applied to the bride/grooms face, arms and feet. It is believed to beautify the couple for their wedding day. The bride/groom is then fed a Bengali sweet to add sweetness to their married life.

In my theory it is just another excuse to doll up, take photos, eat delicious food and have lots of fun more than the bride and groom themselves! 🤣
